A Resort Haven in Changseon Island
Introduction:
Nestled on Changseon Island in Namhae Province, Southcape Owner’s Club stands as a testament to architectural innovation. Spanning the southern tip of the Korean peninsula, this resort development strategically weaves through the dramatic topography of the archipelagic region.
The Apex: A Curvilinear Marvel
Clubhouse Design:
At the heart of the resort lies the Clubhouse, a marvel designed by Mass Studies. The Clubhouse, resembling a pair of outward-bending bars, skillfully engages with the surrounding landscape. The two curves of the building harmonize with the rocky hill to the east and the captivating vista toward the cape to the west. Simultaneously, the design allows the building to embrace the grand entry roundabout to the north and the mesmerizing ocean view to the south.
Central Zone and Contrasts:
The central zone forms the epicenter, housing an impressive entrance patio beneath an open-roof sculpture, a reflection pool, and a breathtaking framed view of the South Sea. Eastward, private spa facilities unfold, while to the west, public restaurant, private dining, and event spaces take prominence. Beyond programmatic distinctions, the design introduces a materiality play—solid versus transparent.
Balancing Solidity and Transparency
Spa and Dining Areas:
The spa area, predominantly enclosed, features a 1m clerestory running along solid exterior walls, culminating in open terraced baths at both ends, offering panoramic views of the South Sea. In contrast, the dining areas showcase glass-clad walls with extended terraces, fostering a sense of openness to the waters and landscape.
Sculpted Roof:
The Clubhouse’s sculpted roof emerges from a geometric precision aligned with systematic structural organization. Responding to the three-dimensional natural context, curved steel beams create a vacuum-formed white concrete membrane. The resulting vaulted concrete canopies form an x-shaped, exploded circle in plan, serving both functional and aesthetic purposes.
Perspective and Experience: A Sensory Journey
Architectural Movement:
From a distance, the Clubhouse exudes a horizontal, demure appearance, blending seamlessly with the surroundings. However, within its confines, the architectural prowess unfolds. Perspectival exaggerations and views framed by the illustrious canopy edges provide a dramatic and immersive experience. The Clubhouse, with its complex relationship with the surroundings, mirrors the unique rias coastline of the archipelagos, making it a harmonious and integral part of the island landscape.
