Blending Functionality and Landscape: The BMX Arena

In the picturesque backdrop of Zhulongshan Scenic Spot in Rizhao, Shandong Province, a unique architectural gem, the BMX Arena, stands as a testament to innovative design. Crafted by hyperSity architects, this cultural and sports structure seamlessly integrates into the surrounding countryside, serving as both a BMX arena and a training ground for the Provincial Games in 2022.

Contextual Brilliance: Embracing Countryside Aesthetics

Nestled between mountains and the sea, the site embodies the serene charm of the countryside. Once part of the plain settlements, it now hosts a BMX arena, strategically positioned for optimal spectator experience during competitions. Beyond its immediate purpose, the arena presents a post-race opportunity for rural development, introducing a new demographic to the countryside.

Reimagining Rural Architecture: Fusion of Tradition and Modernity

hyperSity architects embarked on a unique approach, drawing inspiration from the traditional building materials used by local farmers. The result is a new prototype of rural architecture, seamlessly blending into the landscape. Facing the farmland with wheat and sorghum crops, the structure strategically opens towards the Zhulongshan Mountain range, offering unparalleled views and natural light on the first and second floors.

Innovative Design Elements: Aesthetic and Functional Integration

At the heart of the building lies a central black core tube, serving as the service space for the entire structure, housing bar services and HVAC equipment. As it ascends to the second floor, the tube narrows, allowing natural light to permeate through skylights, creating a meditative space. The second-floor terrace, designed as a series of “windows,” frames diverse perspectives of the landscape.

Five Worlds, One Arena: A Panoramic View

Positioned with its back against the mountains and a view of the sea, the grandstand building boasts five openings facing different directions, each representing unique scenes, demands, and desires. Notably, the side facing the rear window aims to create a vibrant sports community, fostering urbanization among the youth through dynamic and positive sports events.

Transforming Agriculture into Commerce: A Social Coagulator

Cleverly, the architectural ensemble transforms the agricultural landscape into a channel for commercial value. Serving as a pacemaker between divided scenes, the grandstand becomes a hub for various interests, acting as a social coagulator. This unique function stimulates the integration of resources across time, space, classes, people, and seasons on a floating stage.
