Nestled in the picturesque region of Tosa, Japan, the Sameura Canoe Terrace stands as a testament to architectural ingenuity and a harmonious coexistence with nature. Crafted by the collaborative efforts of Sanai Architects, TA+A, and Wakuda Kosuke, this boathouse transcends mere functionality, seamlessly blending into the natural landscape.
A Symphony of Mountains and Water
The topography of the Reihoku region, characterized by mountains and rivers, becomes the canvas for the architectural masterpiece. Lake Sameura, a vital symbol in the region, weaves together the natural terrain and dam structures, forming a breathtaking lake surface environment. The area’s rice terraces, a testament to human modification, enhance the captivating landscape, reflecting the integration of human life into the surrounding mountains and rivers.
Architectural Integration with Nature
The architects strategically positioned the former Sameura-so, a youth house, alongside the deformed terrain, utilizing exposed steps and retaining walls. Instead of isolating the architecture from its environment, the design sought to create a harmonious blend, allowing the existing surroundings to shape the architecture. A notable addition is the large floating roof, echoing the nearby mountains, turning the entire site into a facility that caters to leisure, tourism, and competitive canoeing enthusiasts.
Versatile Spaces and Open Views
The central open space, providing a panoramic view of the lake surface, serves as a hub for outdoor activities, agriculture, and nature experiences in Tosa-cho town. It offers a flexible space for various activities, encouraging communal engagement. The expansive eaves create intermediary zones, fostering breaks and communication. The architects envision this versatile space as a catalyst for promoting competitive canoeing and advancing sports tourism in the town.
Towards a Sustainable Future
By relocating the former youth house and delicately integrating it into the existing topography, the Sameura Canoe Terrace becomes a beacon of sustainable architecture. The hope is that facility operators and users will embrace the multifaceted spaces, contributing to the town’s aspirations of fostering competitive canoeing and propelling sports tourism to new heights.
